Jacob Waldbauer

Jacob Waldbauer holds a BA (2001) from Dartmouth College in Physics and Astronomy and a PhD (2010) in Chemical Oceanography from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program.  After a postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech, he joined the UChicago faculty in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences in 2012.  His group seeks to understand how microbial communities drive biogeochemical cycles and respond to environmental perturbations. They use a combination of field- and culture-based approaches to understand physiology, metabolism and gene regulation in the context of natural microbial habitats. One of their principal analytical tools is mass spectrometry-based proteomics, and they develop new techniques to enable comprehensive and quantitative investigations of the proteomes of microbial cells and communities.
