David O. Meltzer, MD, PhD, is Chief of the Section of Hospital Medicine, Director of the Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS), Chair of the Committee on Clinical and Translational Science, and Professor in the Department of Medicine, Department of Economics and the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago. His research explores problems in health economics and public policy with a focus on the theoretical foundations of medical cost-effectiveness analysis and the cost and quality of care, especially in teaching hospitals. Current work of relevance to the microbiome includes studies of oral health among hospitalized patients and interventions to improve oral and systemic health by expanding access to oral health care, especially among older adults with limited access to oral health care.  He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, American Association of Physicians, and the National Academy of Medicine. He received a BS from Yale, and an MD and PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago
