Dr. Zaborina is a Research Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago,  and directs basic research in the laboratory for Surgical Infection Research in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago, which is headed by Professor John Alverdy M.D.  Her research expertise is in microbial pathogenesis in the field of the gut microbiome response to a major physiologic stress and host stress-derived factors. The laboratory studies how surgical injury shapes the composition and virulence of intestinal microflora to express a more invasive and virulent phenotype leading to postoperative infection and sepsis.
