Microbiomes Across Environments

UChicago September Courses Wrap up at MBL

The September courses at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) have wrapped up for 2021. UChicago undergraduate students immersed themselves in daily field and lab work. Microbes were the theme for one of these courses, Microbiomes Across Environments, led by MBL Scientists David Mark Welch and Elena Lopez Peredo. 14 students took part this year, where they conducted fieldwork at Little Sippewissett Marsh and carried out original research on the microbiomes of horseshoe crabs, brittle stars, sea robins, and other marine organisms. The September courses were spearheaded by Jocelyn Malamy as Master of the Biological Sciences Collegiate Division (BSD), allowing integration of MBL course study into the UChicago curriculum. Students come from a diverse array of enrolled majors at UChicago and take part in one of five courses over 3 weeks, taught by faculty from both institutions.
