Hilary Morrison

Dr. Morrison is a Senior Scientist in the Bay Paul Center at  She holds an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Yale University, where her research focus was the evolution of dsRNA viruses. The Morrison laboratory has studied the evolution of parasite genomes and the structure and function of microbial communities (microbiomes) in a wide variety of environments.  Dr. Morrison has developed universal fusion primers and protocols for 16s rRNA amplification and sequencing, aided in the development of amplicon dataset processing pipelines, and evaluated the accuracy and quality of Next-Gen sequencing platform data. Her current research areas are the role of the gut microbiome in the development of ulcerative colitis, identifying key species in the macroalgal microbiome that regulate host range, and characterizing the microbiome and virome in sewage effluent and in cystic fibrosis patients.
