Steve White is a pulmonary specialist who examines airway repair and inflammation in both asthma and COPD using basic and translational tools. His basic research has examined airway inflammation and remodeling, with a focus on understanding why inflammation persists and why repair is aberrant in airways in asthma. In recent years, he has examined the initial response to airway injury in wide-ranging studies from cell biology to patient-focused translational studies on, for example, the role of vitamin D in asthma and the relationship of the airway microbiome to obstructive lung disease. Recent studies examine the relationship of airway inflammation to the microbiome with plans to test whether altering the airway microbiome specifically improves clinical control of asthma in select phenotypes.
