Dr Eugene B. Chang received his Medical Degree and conducted his Internship, Residency and Fellowship at the University of Chicago. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Chang research focuses on studies of host-microbe interactions of the gastrointestinal tract, employing in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo approaches to define specific mechanisms of action relevant to intestinal, immune and metabolic homeostasis and disease. He as expertise in intestinal epithelial biology/pathobiology, cultivation-dependent and cultivation-independent approaches to study the gut microbiota, and mucosal immunology.  Dr. Chang has been an active participant in the NIH Human Microbiome Project and have helped establish and administrate most of the microbiome core facilities that are being used by investigators in the Biological Science Division (BSD) at the University of Chicago. This includes (1) the Integrated Translational Research core of the NIDDK P30 Digestive Disease Research Core Center (DDRCC) that will provide a clinical research infrastructure and staffing for processing human clinical samples that will be part of this proposal, (2) the Host-Microbe core of the DDRCC provides multiple cutting edge technologies for the study of human and mammalian microbiomes, including new generation DNA sequencing, bioinformatic analysis of 16S rRNA gene-based profiles, gnotobiotic mouse technologies, and anaerobic/aerobic cultivation facilities, and (3) the Tissue Engineering and Cell Models Core that provides human and mammalian cells lines, including organoid preparations derived from host stem cells. Dr. Chang has also established a network of collaborators and resources in the Biological/Physcial Sciences at the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole.
