The Alegre Lab is interested in understanding and controlling immune responses in settings of transplantation, infections, autoimmunity and cancer, with an emphasis on mouse models but also on clinical translation. A main current focus of the laboratory is on the mechanisms that can induce and maintain robust transplantation tolerance as well as the inflammatory mechanisms by which bacterial infections can interfere with the induction and maintenance of transplantation tolerance. This has led us to study whether commensal bacteria can also modulate immune responses against transplanted organs and tumors and to try and identify candidate strains that potentiate or inhibit immune responses.
