Kenneth Kenmer

Dr. Ken Kemner obtained his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Notre Dame in 1993.  From 1993 to 1996 he was a National Research Council Fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. where he focused on magnetic materials and environmental research.  In 1996 he joined Argonne National Laboratory and began to develop the Molecular Environmental Science and Biogeochemical Process Research Group, an integrated multidisciplinary research group that makes use of the Advanced Photon Source and environmental wet chemistry and omics approaches to investigate the role of microorganisms and plants on the biogeochemical cycling of nutrient and contaminant elements.  Recently, he has been a co-PI on a multifaceted bioimaging effort at Argonne (“Small Worlds”) that utilizes quantum dots as a multi-modal tag for imaging bacteria in environmental systems. In 1998 he received the United States Department of Energy-Office of Science Early Career Scientist Award.  In 1999 he received the Presidential Early Career Scientist Award and in 2000 he received the International Union of Crystallography Young Scientist Award.
