FAQ:

What will Orlando's presentation content consist of?

The first part of the workshop will include a presentation given by Orlando (Landon) DeLeon where he will go into detail about why stool is used in Fecal Material Transfer (FMT). This part of the presentation is meant to showcase an example of an actual study where 'omics is useful. Landon will then give and overview of the types of data being handled in the study and general strategies to examine each ‘omics data type. He will then go into detail on cross 'omics analysis and why it is important and how to determine which metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) to use.

What will the hands-on section of the workshop include?

Iva and Matt will first give and introductory lecture on metagenomics concepts, the anvi’o software platform, and the background of the dataset that will be used as the example during the hands on portion. The hands-on portion will include examples of basic genome-level analyses in anvi’o, including gene annotation, taxonomy estimation, and completeness estimation for metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), how to work with metagenomic data interactively in anvi’o and estimation of metabolic potential in MAGs.

How can I best prepare for the workshop?

I would recommend reading up on anvi'o and looking through the discord channel to gain insight on people's common questions. If you have limited coding experience I would go through this unix tutorial and practice basic command line skills in terminal. Keep up to date in the "mbc-workshop-2023" discord chat! Attend the pre-workshop office hours for anvi'o installation help on Wednesday, February 8,⋅1:00 – 4:00 pm via zoom.

Is this event really free?

YES! And there will be lunch as well as snacks included!
